Project Contributions

01
Technology Research & Strategy

Researched emerging technologies for future truck platforms, evaluating their feasibility and potential to enhance off-grid communication, collaboration, and the overlanding experience.

02
In-Vehicle UX Design

Designed Driver Cluster and Center Display experiences that enable overlanders to communicate without cellular connectivity, share live camera views, and support one another throughout their journey.

03
Concept Development & Presentation

Translated research insights into a cohesive future-truck UX concept, collaborating with the team to refine the experience and presenting the solution to GM executive product managers and UX designers.

The Challenge

Exploring remote destinations often means leaving cellular coverage behind, making it difficult for groups to communicate, share information, and stay connected on the trail.

Limited Connectivity

1

Overlanding often requires specialized vehicles, recovery tools, navigation systems, and communication equipment, creating a significant financial barrier for newcomers.

Costly Gear & Equipment

2

Navigating challenging terrain and handling unexpected situations can be difficult without support, making solo trips intimidating for less experienced adventurers.

Difficult to Go Alone

3

The Need for Community

4

Overlanding is about more than reaching a destination. Sharing discoveries, helping fellow travelers, and experiencing the journey together are what make the adventure truly rewarding.

Designing for overlanders

On technical terrain, one wrong decision can damage your vehicle or leave you stranded

Vehicle Selection

A Platform for Exploration

We chose the GMC Canyon AT4X, a truck built for off-road exploration, as the foundation for our concept. Using its rugged capabilities and adventure-ready design as inspiration, we set out to create an in-vehicle experience tailored to the unique needs of overlanders—one that enhances connectivity, collaboration, and the joy of exploring together.

Research

Understanding the Overlanding Community

We explored the world of overlanding through Facebook communities, interviews, YouTube videos, and industry conference materials. By examining real-world experiences, conversations, and expert insights, we developed a deeper understanding of overlanders’ needs, challenges, and pain points—uncovering opportunities to create a more connected and rewarding adventure experience.

Key Insights

More Than a Journey, It’s a Shared Experience

01

02

Navigation Is a Team Sport

Overlanding depends on coordinated group support (e.g., lead vehicles, spotters, real-time guidance) to navigate safely.

03

Visibility Gaps Creates Critical Risk

In conditions like poor weather, nighttime, or convoy separation, communication breaks down, increasing uncertainty and risk.

04

Overlanders Seek Community, Not Solo Experiences

High Barrier to Entry for Newcomers

New and experienced overlanders turn to forums, social platforms, and meetups to exchange knowledge and experiences.

New overlanders feel overwhelmed and rely heavily on others for guidance before starting.
